Sicilian Caltagirone 10″ Boy on a Dolphin
A boy rides a dolphin that is riding on the back of a turtle. We guessed this might be Taras, the son of Poseidon who was in a shipwreck when his father sent a dolphin to rescue him. As for the turtle, we wonder if this is a nod to the Hindu concept of the turtle who carries the world. Such leaps from one culture to another are not so strange when speaking of Sicily!
Artisan Giacomo Alessi is not only a master of his craft, he is also a scholar in the field. His work both in majolica and in writing has been featured and published internationally and is especially cherished in Italy. His pieces from Caltagirone evoke a mythological world of beauty cultivated by the rich Sicilian culture.
You could put a votive candle in the seashell; indeed, there are many uses for this piece of Italian decor!
This Sicilian piece of maiolica is 10″ in height, 10″ in length, and 5″ in width. Measurements are approximate.
