There is a legend about the Medici family from the 15^th century in which crowing roosters alerted Giuliano de Medici to hired assassins approaching. Because of this, rooster pitchers like this one are considered providers of good fortune. This Limoni rooster, or chicken, pitcher was handcrafted and hand-painted in Santo Stefano di Camastra, Sicily, Italy, by La Giara.

Lemons were brought to Sicily by Arabs when they colonized the island. The volcanic ash in the soil around Mount Etna combines with the Mediterranean climate to produce fruit unique to the island. These lemons are featured on the Limoni di Sicilia pattern.
