Ceramiche di Sicilia 14.5” Round Serving/Wall Platter with Fishermen

This platter was hand painted in Baucina, a small town outside Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The inspiration the artisans take from the famed artisan De Simone, who, in turn, was inspired by Picasso, is evident in their beautiful work, as you can see in this stunning platter. Indeed, fishing is a major part of the culture economy of the island, and much of it is done by fishermen working in small groups. We love the depiction of fishing on this platter, especially the way the net wraps around like a ribbon, and the glorious Felucca, the boat traditionally used by Sicilian fishermen. Actually, it is more likely to be a Luzzu, the traditional Maltese fishing boat that has eyes on the bow. These eyes are a leftover of Phonecian rule, and they are the Eyes of Horus or of Osiris. Such details on this platter reveal so much about the rich history of Sicily and its surrounding islands. At fourteen and a half inches in diameter, this platter is food safe and is wired to hang as wall decor.
